Coming to Terms

I am coming to terms with my future. And believe me, it is not that hard. We all know that all of us will have to go one day, so why worry about something we can not change? If you had a long and happy, interesting life, on which you can look back with satisfaction, like I did, it is even easier not to revolt against the „cruel” but inevitable ending of this pleasant life.

In my case there are some factors that make it even easier. As a result of this disease and it’s treatment, I lost most of my teeth, my saliva system got all messed up, my throat is not functioning properly, part of the food goes the wrong way and I choke, swallowing is painful, so that I am unable to eat real food. I have a hose into my stomach and through this I feed myself with liquid food. I am losing strength and I am down to 51 kilograms.

This all contributes to a lowering of the quality of my life, so it will not be hard to say goodbye to it. I am sure that one of the first things I will have in that other world (if I am admitted) is a meal consisting of an oyster stew, a salmon dish, Pork chops with fried potatoes and tomato salad with basil and onions. Ending with a chocolate omelet.

What is difficult is to say goodbye to my beloved ones, but then I believe we will meet again. My religious beliefs and my faith help me a lot. All this makes it easy to look into the face of Death without (much) fear and apprehension.

My discussing this with friends, family and on my Blog has brought some heartwarming responses from a lot of you and the warm words, praise for my attitude and character made me feel very good and rich to have such a large number of dear friends and loving relatives. This shows that it was a life worth living.

Dear Edmund,

I am an acquaintance's of your daughter Lisa (and an avid reader of her and Robb's blog) and have been silently reading your blog for the last several months -- entranced by a life that is so unlike mine, and so filled with nature and culture and fascinating impressions.

Thanks for sharing your life with us, and I wish you the very, very best to you and your family.

Warmest regards, Becky

Thank YOU, Edmund! I do have a blog.. I met Lisa online as we both have been mad quilters for some time. Therefore, I write about quilting ... and driving (since I live in Southern California!) http://www.beckyhaycox.com/hamblog
